Executive Director – South Central Family Center
Location: Columbia, TN

About the Organization
South Central Family Center is a well-established nonprofit organization serving Maury County and surrounding areas by providing temporary economic assistance, housing support, and resources that foster healthy and stable home environments. The organization offers homeless assistance programs, budgeting and financial education classes, and community outreach to vulnerable populations.
In 2025, South Central Family Center served hundreds of families with rental, utility, and basic needs assistance, as well as comprehensive support services for the local unhoused population.
Through grant funding and community partnerships, the organization provides emergency housing assistance, daily meal support, and seasonal cooling and heating shelter services to ensure safety and stability for individuals and families experiencing housing insecurity. These programs are designed to promote long-term stability, self-sufficiency, and improved quality of life within the community.
Position Summary
The Executive Director is the chief executive and operational leader of South Central Family Center. This individual will provide vision, strategic direction, and effective management of all programs, staff, and organizational functions. The Executive Director is directly responsible for financial sustainability, nonprofit budget development and management, community relationships, grant funding, program integrity, and ensuring the organization’s mission is fulfilled with excellence.
Candidates must have demonstrated experience creating, managing, and overseeing nonprofit budgets, as well as direct professional experience serving and working with unhoused populations.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Strategic Direction
- Provide vision and leadership in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and services aligned with the mission.
- Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors to set long-term goals and strategies.
Program & Community Engagement
- Lead and strengthen programs serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness and housing instability.
- Maintain direct understanding of the needs and challenges of the unhoused population and ensure services remain responsive and trauma-informed.
- Champion outreach to community partners, stakeholders, local government, service agencies, and donors.
- Represent the organization publicly to promote awareness and advocacy for housing insecurity issues.
Funding & Grants
- Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies to sustain and expand operations.
- Identify funding sources and write competitive grant proposals, particularly federal and state grants (HUD, THDA strongly preferred).
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with funders, corporate sponsors, and private donors.
Financial Management (REQUIRED EXPERIENCE)
- Develop, implement, and manage the organization’s annual nonprofit operating budget.
- Monitor revenue and expenditures to ensure fiscal stability and compliance.
- Provide accurate financial reporting to the Board of Directors and funding agencies.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations.
- Oversee grant budgets and ensure proper allocation and reporting of restricted funds.
Applicants must have prior experience building and managing nonprofit budgets and demonstrating fiscal accountability within a grant-funded organization.
Operational Oversight
- Direct and supervise staff and volunteers to ensure high-quality program delivery.
- Maintain operational policies and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience working directly with unhoused populations or administering homeless assistance programs.
- Proven experience creating, managing, and overseeing nonprofit budgets.
- Significant leadership experience in nonprofit or human services settings.
- Demonstrated success in grant writing and fund development, including familiarity with federal/state grant processes (HUD, THDA preferred).
- Strong community relationship-building skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to lead with integrity, transparency, and accountability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior executive leadership experience in a nonprofit organization.
- Experience managing multi-program, grant-funded service organizations.
