Columbia Power & Water Systems (CPWS) is a public utility proudly serving the citizens of Columbia and Maury County Tennessee since 1939. CPWS is recruiting a Water Treatment Plant Technician to perform maintenance on the water treatment plant and pump station equipment.
This is a safety-sensitive position subject to standby, afterhours, and/or emergency call out. Technicians must meet residency requirements (must reside within a CPWS service territory or Maury County). The plant operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on three 8-hour shifts. Technicians are assigned a shift upon hire but may be subject to emergency call out on other shifts. Weekend and holiday shifts are required.
The primary duties & responsibilities of this position include:
- Perform maintenance and repairs on all plant and pump station equipment. Maintain preventative maintenance and repair work records.
- Order parts for repair of equipment and coordinate and oversee contractors when professional repairs are necessary
- Maintain, repair, and calibrate SCADA and other systems such as PLC’s, transducer calibration, and other devices using schematic diagrams.
- Troubleshoot electrical motor control centers and other electrical and electronic problems
- Operate and control electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of raw water into treating plant
- Add chemicals, such as chlorine, alum, and lime into water or adjust automatic devices that admit chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize, and clarify water
- Pump purified water into water mains
- Monitor panel board and adjust controls to regulate flow rates, loss of head pressure, water elevation, and distribution of water
- Clean tanks and filter beds using backwashing (reverse flow of water)
- Collect water samples from distribution system and test samples to determine acidity, color, and impurities using colorimeter, turbidimeter, and conductivity meter. Record data such as residual content of chemicals, water turbidity, etc.
- Other duties as assigned
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift 0 – 100 pounds for 2 hours a day
- Ability to lift and carry 25 - 100 pounds for 2 hours a day
- Ability to walk and stand for 4 hours a day
- Ability to stoop, bend, climb, and twist
- Ability to talk, see, and hear
- Reaching, handling, fingering, and feeling
- Ability to navigate and operate in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, etc., which may require bending, crawling, and maneuvering in tight areas
- Ability to occasionally safely and comfortably work at heights of up to 60 feet
- Environmental Conditions: Ability to work both inside and outside, but mainly inside with some outside work. Wet and Humid: Wet: Contact with water or other liquids. Humid: Atmospheric conditions with moisture content sufficiently high to cause marked bodily discomfort. Hazards: Situations in which the individual is exposed to the definite risk of bodily injury. Exposure to noise, vibrations, odors, toxic conditions, dust, and/or poor ventilation.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent and a certificate of completion from a trade school in industrial maintenance or industrial electricity required; 3+ years’ experience in lieu of education will be considered
- Maintain a valid State of Tennessee Driver’s License; driving record must meet the requirements to be covered by CPWS liability insurance.
- Proficient in industrial, electrical, and electronic trouble shooting, and Motor Control Centers
- Highly proficient with various computer skills, PLC’s and their software, SCADA systems, and other maintenance software and current computer programs
- Experience in industrial maintenance or industrial electricity preferred
- Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Grade IV Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate preferred
