Columbia Power & Water Systems (CPWS) is a public utility proudly serving the citizens of Columbia and Maury County Tennessee since 1939. CPWS is recruiting a Water Metering Technician to coordinate the testing and repair of water meters and manage the cross connection and backflow prevention programs.
This position subject to standby, afterhours, and/or emergency call out. Metering Technicians must meet residency requirements (must reside within a CPWS service territory or Maury County).
The primary duties & responsibilities of this position include:
- Test and repair water meters
- Inspect meters and connections for defects, damage, and unauthorized connections
- Ensure accurate readings are obtained during meter changes and processing of service orders
- Connect and disconnect services according to service orders
- Assist Water Engineering with various tasks from time to time
- Assist the Meter Shop Manager with meter inventory and meter repair parts inventory
- Perform final inspection on all new metered services as part of the certificate of occupancy process
- Perform field tests on larger water meters
- Perform pressure tests at customer’s request
- Perform tests and maintain records on backflow prevention devices
- Ensure appropriate cross connection surveys are conducted on customer devices in accordance with TDEC guidelines
- Repair miscellaneous distribution equipment including but not limited to water meters, cut-offs, gaskets, and transponders.
- Other duties as assigned
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift 0 – 100 pounds for 1 hour a day
- Ability to lift and/or carry objects weighing 0 – 10 pounds for 6 hours a day
- Ability to walk
- Ability to stand for 8 hours a day
- Ability to sit at a desk or table for 8 hours a day
- Ability to talk, see, hear, reach, handle, and feel
- Ability to stoop, kneel, and crouch for long periods of time
- Ability to navigate and operate in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, etc., which may require bending, crawling, and maneuvering in tight areas
- Ability to work inside and outside and be exposed to noisy places, fumes, chemicals, toxic substances, and machinery
- Ability to be exposed to weather conditions that are cold, hot, rainy, and windy
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Maintain a valid State of Tennessee Driver’s License; driving record must meet the requirements to be covered by CPWS liability insurance.
- Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation Certificate of Backflow Prevention Assemblies required
- Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation Grade II Distribution System Operator Certificate required
- 3+ years of experience in water distribution or maintenance required
- Proficient in Word, Excel, and operating various computer programs and tools
